JCPenney

JCPenney: The Quiet Green Giant

To the average shopper, JCPenney is the place to go for great styles at compelling prices. But to industry insiders, JCPenney is an eco-leader, ranking as a 63 out of 500 companies on Newsweek's second annual list of "The Greenest Big Companies in America".

JCPenney is one of the largest purchasers of clothing, shoes, accessories and household items to be sold in the US. The focus of our supply chain social and environmental responsibility program is on the manufacturing of JCPenney private brand products and exclusive brand products when we source the merchandise. In 2012, we used more than 700 factories across more than 25 countries for production of private brands.

JCPenney with approximately 1,100 stores, 14 logistics facilities , its physical footprint across the country is significant. JCPenney is committed to reducing our environmental footprint through operational efficiency measures including energy and waste management.

In 2009, JCPenney launched an energy strategy with a goal of reducing energy consumption per square foot by 20% by 2015 (based on a 2008 baseline) and at the end of 2012, JCPenney had achieved a 16.5% reduction. As of October 2013, 500 JCPenney buildings had earned the ENERGY STAR label and the company had been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with a string of ENERGY STAR awards.

JCPenney contracts the transportion of millions of goods from suppliers to logistics facilities to stores and customers, and we do this with maximum efficiency. By optimizing transport loads, using its fleet to backhaul materials, and designing efficient e-commerce shipping strategies, JCPenney ensure that its costs and carbon emissions are minimized.
The truck fleet that we lease to pick up JCPenney shipments from ports in southern California includes 55 clean diesel 1) trucks. Additionally, JCPenney saved an estimated five million gallons of diesel fuel by transporting almost half of our domestic shipping loads from consolidation facilities to regional logistics facilities through intermodal rail in 2012.

Recyclables from stores are transported to JCPenney's logistics facilities where they are sorted and then sent to processing facilities. In 2012, JCPenney recycled 80,816 tons of recyclable materials through main recycling streams for cardboard, plastic films and bags, hangers, mixed paper, metals and electronic waste.

1) What is clean diesel?

Clean diesel is the new generation of diesel made up of a three-part system that combines cleaner diesel fuel, advanced engines and effective emissions control technology. This new system ensures that clean diesel engines will continue to play a dominant role in the future while helping meet energy security, greenhouse gas and clean air objectives around the world.

Aquaponics as a Hobby

Are you looking for a way to keep your children busy and make them more responsible or you are a senior trying to find a profitable activity that will not require too much effort? Are you always on the run and you can never get to the market to buy fresh veggies for your meals? Then why not start an aquaponic garden? It is suitable for all the persons listed above and for many more. In fact, everyone will find this activity enjoyable and rewarding.

For children

This is the perfect way to make your children responsible. They will need to feed the fish each and every day and make sure that the air pump is working perfectly so that the fish get enough oxygen. Also, they will have to monitor the state of the vegetables and when they get yellowish they need to announce you. These are not easy tasks, but will give them a sense of responsibility and will know that someone relies on them. Also, they will be able to see how fish and plants grow, which will expand their knowledge about the vegetal and animal world.

Aquaponics 4 You

For working adults

Vegetables are essential for a good nutrition, yet you can not always find fresh, organic veggies in the market. With an aquaponic garden in your house you will have fish and veggies for your family without depending on the market. Also, you will save some money without investing too much of your precious time.

For retired seniors

When retirement comes, many people seek activities which do not require too much effort. Aquaponic gardening will keep you occupied for a while, yet without getting over your entire day. In addition to that it will spare them of going to the market to buy veggies, it will help them save some money and at the same time will not require them too much effort.
If they place the system at their waist level they will not need to bend or stretch, which will make this activity far more pleasant.
No matter what age group you are a part of, aquaponics can prove to be rewarding for you. Give it a try and you will never want to live without this system!
